Stainless steel build that outlasts everything on your desk
The Volcano Hybrid weighs 1800 g and measures 200 × 200 × 180 mm. The stainless steel housing absorbs years of daily use without showing wear, and the conical shape keeps it rock-stable. Storz & Bickel builds every unit in Germany and gives each one a final function check before it leaves the factory.
The filling chamber twists onto the top with a locking mechanism, a tighter connection than the friction-fit design on older Volcano models. The tube attachment rotates 360° on the chamber, so you can draw from any angle without repositioning the unit.
Three color options exist: Silver (the original 2019 release), Onyx (2021), and Evergreen (December 2025). Our Onyx test unit, pictured above holding 180°C, shows how the black finish hides fingerprints better than the Silver. Storz & Bickel released the Evergreen alongside a matching green Volcano Classic, signaling continued investment in the Volcano line six years after launch. All three share identical internals, so color is purely preference.
The power cord detaches from the body for cleaner storage, an easy quality-of-life improvement.
One weak point: the filling chamber uses plastic components that flex slightly under hand pressure. This hasn't caused functional problems in our testing, but the contrast with the tank-like base is noticeable.
Hybrid heater fully extracts a chamber in 2 bags
The Volcano Hybrid uses convection (hot air forced through your cannabis by an internal fan) paired with conduction (heated chamber walls in direct contact with the material). This combination extracts faster and more thoroughly than convection alone.
Heat-up takes approximately 40 seconds to reach 180°C. The full temperature range spans 40-230°C in 1°C increments, giving you granular control. As a session vaporizer, the Hybrid keeps the chamber heated continuously, extracting progressively with each bag or draw.
The conduction element earns the "Hybrid" name. A metal ring on top of the unit transfers heat directly into the filling chamber walls, pre-cooking the cannabis before the fan pushes air through it. This produces noticeably denser first bags than convection-only desktops. The milky-white bag we shot at 230°C above is exactly what a maxed-out fill looks like. In our testing, the Hybrid fully extracts a chamber in 2 bags where pure convection desktops need 4.
Draw resistance is effectively zero through the balloon, since the fan does all the work. The tube needs only a gentle draw, with the pump switched off.
Balloon fills in 35 seconds, stays fresh for 5 minutes
The balloon system is the Volcano's signature. The fan fills a standard bag in about 35 seconds. Detach it, snap in the mouthpiece, and sip vapor at your own pace. The Easy Valve seals automatically, trapping vapor until you push the mouthpiece in. Our black test unit filled the tall bag pictured below at 180°C, a comfortable everyday setting for couch sessions.
Consume each balloon within 5 minutes for the best flavor. After that, terpenes condense on the bag walls and the vapor turns noticeably harsher. If you can't finish a full bag that quickly, fill it only halfway.
Tube draws at your own pace
The tube connects to the same filling chamber and offers continuous draws without filling a bag. Keep the pump off and take slow, self-paced pulls. Storz & Bickel's operating instructions call for a tube at least 1 m long, which gives the vapor room to cool. The orange valve adapter pictured below clicks onto the chamber in one motion, so swapping from balloon to tube takes seconds.
The tube opens up water filtration too. The balloon mouthpiece fits most 14 mm glass joints, and a separate adapter lets you connect the tube to a water pipe for even smoother, cooler vapor.
Wall-powered desktop with no battery constraints
The Volcano Hybrid plugs into a wall outlet with no battery to charge or deplete. It reaches 180°C in about 40 seconds and holds there as long as you keep it on, exactly as our unit sits plugged in and ready below. The auto-shutoff timer defaults to 30 minutes and stretches up to 6 hours through the Bluetooth app. Switch it off when you're done, and don't leave it running unattended.
Load, twist, press air: 3 steps to vapor
Using the Volcano Hybrid is straightforward. Grind your cannabis, load the filling chamber, twist it onto the heater, and wait for the display to hit your set temperature. Then press the air button to fill a balloon, or attach the tube and draw with the pump off. A balloon fills in about 35 seconds. When you're finished, lift the hot chamber off and set it on a heat-resistant surface.
The 0.75 g chamber works best with 0.15-0.5 g loads for daily use. For smaller amounts, spread a thin layer across the bottom screen to ensure even airflow. Dosing capsules (with the optional Hybrid capsule adapter or capsule filling chamber) shrink the effective oven to about 0.1-0.2 g. That keeps solo sessions efficient without wasting material. The twist-on step is the only one with any technique to it, shown below on our coffee table with the unit already holding 180°C.
Quick cleaning, fresh bags every 2 weeks
Maintenance is minimal. Brush the chamber screen after each session with the included brush (takes seconds). Storz & Bickel recommends swapping balloons, mouthpieces and the tube every 2 weeks for hygiene, and sooner if they get discolored or sticky. Give everyone their own balloon or tube and mouthpiece, and clean the filling chamber before you pass it to someone else. The photo below shows how much spent cannabis a quick brush-out clears from the chamber.
For deeper cleaning, follow Storz & Bickel's cleaning routine. Let the chamber cool, take it apart, and soak the parts in isopropyl alcohol or warm soapy water. Pull plastic parts out of the alcohol within 30 minutes, then rinse and dry everything before you reassemble it. We soak the screens in a glass of solution, as pictured below, and they come out looking new. The base just needs a wipe with a damp cloth (unplug it first) and a look at the air filter every 4 weeks.

Bluetooth app automates step-up sessions
The Volcano Hybrid connects via Bluetooth to the Storz & Bickel web app. The old native app is gone from both the App Store and Google Play. You run it in a Bluetooth-capable browser, like Chrome on Android or Bluefy on iPhone.
The standout feature is Workflows: four presets (Balloon and Flow 1, 2 and 3) that chain temperature steps, pauses and timed pump bursts. The Balloon preset, for example, climbs from 170°C to 220°C in 5°C steps. This automates step-up sessions that pull both flavor and full extraction from a single load. For long tube sessions, skip the presets and nudge the temperature up by hand as the load browns. You can also adjust display brightness, the auto-shutoff timer, and the heat-up alert sound.
The touch screen on the unit handles basic temperature and fan controls without needing the app. It responds well, though it occasionally requires a double-tap to register.
