The Arizer XQ2 wins, 8.2 to 7.8 overall, on the strength of value and portability. It costs $210 less and adds whip delivery, digital control and a remote. Vapor and flavor
Both use pure convection, and the Classic edges vapor 8.7 to 8.4. Its pump filled a full bag in 30 to 45 seconds in our sessions, and the Easy Valve has essentially no draw resistance. Storz & Bickel says to finish a balloon within 10 minutes, and it tastes best in the first 5.
The XQ2 makes its case through glass. At around 180°C, terpene clarity through the whip rivals desktops costing twice as much. Push to 200-210°C and the clouds thicken. Its bags filled more slowly than the Classic's, but a 0.3 g load gave us 6 to 8 balloons when we stepped up the heat.
Balloons, whips and session style
This is where your habits decide it. The Classic is built around the balloon. You fill a bag, click on the mouthpiece and sip at your own pace, and the valve closes when you let go. For group sessions, give everyone their own balloon and mouthpiece.
The XQ2 lets you switch between whip and balloon in about 15 seconds. The whip suits long solo sessions where you step through temperatures, and its fan runs almost silently. Its balloons use a separate silicone cap and take more technique to fill cleanly. A 19 mm glass elbow from Arizer also lets you run the whip through a water pipe.
For small solo loads, flip the XQ2's connoisseur bowl to its smaller Flavor side. The Cloud side takes bigger loads for longer sessions. The Classic's chamber holds about 0.6 g, and the optional Classic Dosing Capsule Adapter handles smaller loads.
Controls and heat-up
Ease of use ties at 8.0, for opposite reasons. The Classic has two toggle switches and a dial, and first-timers get good vapor within minutes. It has no shutoff timer, though, so switch off the heat and pump when you walk away.
The XQ2's display shows both target and current temperature. Its remote handles power, temperature, fan speed and three presets from across the room.
Storz & Bickel rates the Classic at about 5 minutes to 180°C, and the XQ2 lists about 90 seconds. That gap matters less than it looks. The XQ2's glass needs another 5 to 10 minutes of heat soak before its best vapor, so both reward a patient start. Switch the XQ2 on before you grind, so the glass soaks up heat while you load the bowl.
Cleaning
The Classic is the easier clean. Brush the chamber screens after each session, take the chamber apart for a soak in warm soapy water every so often, and swap balloons and mouthpieces every two weeks. The XQ2 has more glass to look after. Soak the bowl and glass parts in isopropyl alcohol, rinse and dry them, wash the silicone whip separately, and replace the intake filter every 4 to 6 months. Build and long-term value
The Classic's stainless steel body earns a 9.5 build score against 8.2 for the XQ2. It has been in production since 2000, and Storz & Bickel repairs it if a switch or the pump wears out. The XQ2's glass parts crack if dropped, and the balloon arm and whip mouthpiece stay hot after a session.
Value flips that result, 8.8 for the XQ2 against 7.0 for the Classic. Portability favors the XQ2 too, 7.5 to 5.0, since its base weighs under a third of the Classic's.
