The Arizer Solo 3 (we tested the current V2) wins on our scores, 8.4 overall against 8.2 for the Arizer Solo 2 Max, but only just. The Solo 3 buys you cleaner flavor, an on-demand mode and a bigger XL stem. The Solo 2 Max costs $80 less, weighs 70 g less and runs a little longer per charge.

Vapor and flavor: the Solo 3 edges ahead
Both vapes carry vapor through borosilicate glass, so neither tastes of plastic. The Solo 3's convection-dominant heater gives cleaner terpene separation, and it scores 9.0 for vapor quality against 8.5. It's one of the best-tasting portables we've tested.
The Solo 2 Max still tastes great, with its most expressive flavor between 175°C and 190°C. Near its 220°C ceiling, the vapor turns into thick, toasty clouds. Session style: on-demand is the real upgrade
In session mode, the Solo 3 holds your temperature for up to 20 minutes. Switch to on-demand and a press of Up fires a short heat cycle, and you can set the heat timer to match your inhale, so you take a hit or two and stop. That suits microdosers and anyone who vapes through the day.
The Solo 2 Max keeps things simpler with session heating only. It scores 8.5 for ease of use against 8.0, the one category it wins. The Solo 3's left, up, right unlock sequence felt clunky for our first few days, and neither vape has an app. The Solo 2 Max does add a Dark Mode for low-light sessions, and both screens flip when you run the vape upside down on a bong.
Battery and size: the Solo 2 Max travels lighter
The Solo 2 Max gave us 15 sessions per charge, and the Solo 3 gave us 13. Both charge over USB-C with pass-through in about 3 hours, and the Solo 2 Max reaches 80% in about an hour against about two for the Solo 3. Neither battery is user-replaceable, though Arizer runs a replacement service.
Size is the bigger split, since the Solo 2 Max is 17 mm shorter and 70 g lighter. Neither fits a pocket once the stem goes in, so treat both as bag or home vapes. Carry a spare stem too, because borosilicate glass breaks on a hard floor.
Value: what the extra $80 buys
That $80 is the US list-price gap. Street prices move that gap around, so check the live prices at the top of this page before you decide. The Solo 3 also scores higher for value, 8.5 against 7.8, because the extra money buys real hardware. You get four glass tubes, including two water pipe adapter stems, plus the on-demand mode. It also heats faster on the spec sheet, 15 seconds to temperature against 30 for the Solo 2 Max. One Solo 3 quirk: the XL stem sometimes roasts the bottom of a load darker than the top. A coarser grind and session temperatures below 200°C even it out.
