How to Dab in 2026: eRig & Torch Rig Beginner Guide

Dabbing is the fastest way to feel the effects of cannabis concentrates, delivering potent vapor in a single hit. Whether you're using a modern eRig or a traditional torch setup, the process follows the same core principle: heat a surface, apply concentrate, inhale.

This guide covers both methods step by step, with specific temperatures, concentrate recommendations, and the mistakes we see beginners make most often. We've tested every major eRig on the market at VapeExperts, so we'll point you to specific rigs that match your budget and experience level.

Dabbing vaporizes concentrates at 315-700°F for instant effects

Dabbing works by placing a small amount of cannabis concentrate onto a heated surface, instantly vaporizing the active cannabinoids and terpenes. The vapor passes through water filtration and into your lungs, producing effects within seconds.

Concentrates contain 60-90% THC compared to 15-30% in flower. A single dab the size of a grain of rice can deliver the same effects as an entire bowl of cannabis. Start small.

The heated surface is called a dab nail or quartz banger, and it typically operates between 315-700°F. Lower temperatures preserve flavor, while higher temperatures produce denser clouds. We cover the full science in our vaporizer temperature guide.

You need 4 tools to start dabbing

Every dab setup requires the same core components, regardless of whether you use a torch or an eRig. Here's what to have on hand.

1. A heat source and nail

Traditional rigs use a butane torch to heat a quartz banger or titanium nail. eRigs replace the torch with a battery-powered atomizer that heats on command. The Dr. Dabber Switch 2 uses induction heating to eliminate atomizer replacement costs entirely.

2. A carb cap

A carb cap restricts airflow over the heated nail, lowering the effective vaporization temperature for smoother, more flavorful hits. Most eRigs include one in the box. Some users add terp pearls inside the banger to distribute heat and improve extraction further.

3. A dab tool

A metal or glass wand used to scoop and apply concentrate to the heated surface. A toothpick-sized amount is all you need for your first session.

4. Cannabis concentrate

Wax, badder, shatter, live resin, or rosin all work. Each has a different consistency that affects how easily it loads onto the dab tool. We break down every type in our cannabis concentrates guide.

eRigs heat to dabbing temperature in 5-10 seconds

An eRig automates the heating process, making it the easiest way to start dabbing. No torch, no guesswork, no timing.

Step 1: Charge and power on. Most eRigs use USB-C and need 60-90 minutes for a full charge. The Puffco Peak Pro delivers around 30 sessions per charge, while the Bomb eRig Aerix manages about 25.

A rice-grain-sized dab (0.025–0.05 g) is all you need for one session. Place it in the center of the chamber without touching the heating element.

Step 2: Load a rice-grain-sized dab. Use your dab tool to place concentrate directly into the chamber or atomizer. Avoid touching the heating element with the tool.

Place the dab directly in the center of the chamber. Avoid dragging it along the walls or touching the heating element with the tool.

Step 3: Select your temperature. Start at 450°F for a balanced first hit. Most eRigs offer either preset modes (4 heat levels) or precise degree-by-degree control. The Bomb eRig Aerix offers 1-degree precision across a 200-700°F range.

Step 4: Wait for the heat-up indicator. eRigs vibrate, flash, or beep when ready. Heat-up takes 5-10 seconds on most modern rigs.

Step 5: Cap and inhale slowly. Place the carb cap over the chamber and draw slowly for 10-15 seconds. Slow, steady pulls produce better flavor than aggressive rips.

Step 6: Exhale and assess. Wait 5-10 minutes before taking another dab. Concentrates hit harder and faster than flower, and overconsumption is the most common beginner mistake.

Torch rigs need a 30-45 second cool-down after heating

Traditional torch-and-glass rigs offer more control for experienced users but require careful temperature management. The technique is straightforward once you learn the timing.

Step 1: Fill your rig with water. Add enough to cover the percolator slits. Inhale through the mouthpiece to test. If water splashes your lips, pour some out.

Step 2: Heat the banger with a torch. Aim the flame at the bottom and sides of the quartz banger for 25-30 seconds until it glows faintly red.

Step 3: Let it cool for 30-45 seconds. This is the step most beginners skip. A red-hot banger destroys terpenes and produces harsh, burnt vapor. Cooling to 400-500°F produces the best results.

Step 4: Apply the dab and cap. Drop the concentrate into the banger using your dab tool, then immediately place the carb cap on top. Rotate the cap gently to direct airflow.

Step 5: Inhale slowly for 15-20 seconds. Draw gently through the mouthpiece. If the hit is harsh, your banger was too hot. If it leaves a puddle of unvaporized concentrate, it was too cool.

Step 6: Clean immediately. Swab the inside of the banger with a dry cotton swab while it's still warm. This prevents residue buildup that degrades flavor over time.

The cold-start method is more forgiving for beginners

A cold-start dab reverses the process: load concentrate into a room-temperature banger, cap it, then apply heat gradually until vapor appears. This approach preserves more terpenes and eliminates the guessing game of cool-down timing.

Heat the bottom of the loaded banger with a torch on low flame. Within 10-15 seconds, you'll see the concentrate bubble and vapor form inside the cap. Start inhaling immediately.

Low-temp dabs at 315-450°F deliver the best flavor

Four side-by-side views of the Puffco Pivot LED light bar showing all four temperature preset colors: blue (low), green (medium), red (high), and white (max)
Most eRigs and dab pens offer preset temperature levels. Blue corresponds to low-temp flavor hits (315–400°F), green to medium (400–500°F), red to high (500–600°F), and white to max output.

Temperature controls the balance between flavor and cloud density. Here's what VapeExperts recommends based on our testing across 12+ eRigs.

315-400°F (low temp): Maximum terpene preservation. Wispy, flavorful vapor with a smooth throat feel. Best for live resin and rosin where you want to taste the strain. Some concentrate may remain unvaporized.

400-500°F (medium temp): The sweet spot for most users. Strong flavor with visible vapor production. Efficient extraction with minimal waste. Start here if you're new.

500-600°F (high temp): Dense clouds, stronger throat hit, reduced flavor nuance. Terpenes begin degrading above 500°F. Good for distillate or when cloud density matters more than taste.

600°F+ (too hot): Harsh, burnt taste with potential for harmful byproducts. We don't recommend this range for regular use. If your eRig only offers preset modes, avoid the highest setting until you know your tolerance.

Start with badder or live rosin for the easiest first dab

Different concentrate consistencies: crumble/sugar (left) is dry and easy to scoop; live resin/sauce (right) is more liquid and requires a steady hand or heated tool.

Not all concentrates handle the same way. The consistency determines how easy it is to load, dose, and vaporize.

Badder and budder have a soft, cake-batter consistency that scoops easily onto a dab tool. They vaporize evenly and are the most forgiving for beginners.

Live resin and live rosin deliver the richest terpene profiles. Live resin is solvent-extracted, while rosin uses only heat and pressure. Both are slightly more liquid at room temperature, so work quickly when loading.

Shatter is glass-like and brittle, making it harder to dose precisely. Break off a small piece and let it warm slightly on the dab tool before applying.

Diamonds and sauce combine crystalline THC-A with liquid terpene sauce. Flavorful and potent, but the runny consistency requires a steady hand.

Clean your setup after every 3-5 sessions

Residue buildup is the number one reason dabs start tasting burnt. Clean equipment delivers better flavor and extends the life of your atomizer or banger.

The essentials: cotton swabs and 90%+ isopropyl alcohol

For eRigs: Soak the atomizer in isopropyl alcohol (90%+) for 20-30 minutes. Rinse with warm water and let it dry completely before reassembling. The Dr. Dabber Switch 2 uses induction heating with no atomizer to replace, which eliminates this maintenance step entirely.

For quartz bangers: Swab with a cotton swab after every single dab while the banger is still warm. For deeper cleaning, heat the banger until residue turns white, let it cool, then soak in isopropyl alcohol.

For water chambers: Empty and rinse with warm water after every session. Deep clean weekly with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt.

5 beginner mistakes that waste concentrate

1. Dabbing too hot. If your hit tastes burnt or makes you cough hard, lower the temperature by 25-50°F or add 10 seconds to your cool-down time.

2. Loading too much. A dab the size of a grain of rice (roughly 0.025-0.05 g) is plenty for a beginner. You can always take a second hit. You can't un-take a massive one.

3. Inhaling too hard. Aggressive draws cool the nail too quickly and can splash concentrate out of the chamber. Slow, steady pulls for 10-15 seconds produce better vapor and fuller flavor.

4. Skipping the carb cap. Without a carb cap, your dab vaporizes inefficiently and most concentrate goes to waste. Always cap your nail or chamber immediately after loading.

5. Not cleaning after sessions. Dark, carbonized residue on your banger or atomizer destroys flavor and can damage heating elements. Swab after every torch dab. Clean your eRig every 3-5 sessions.
